One-dimensional barcodes carry a limited amount of information. For example, barcodes on products can only accommodate 13 digits (EAN-13 digits) of Arabic numerals. More information can only rely on the support of commodity databases and leave the pre-established database. Barcodes have no meaning, so to a certain extent they also limit the scope of application of bar codes. For this reason, two-dimensional bar codes were invented in the 1990s. In addition to the advantages of one-dimensional barcodes, two-dimensional barcodes also have the advantages of large amount of information, high reliability, and confidentiality and anti-counterfeiting.
Two-dimensional bar codes mainly include PDF417 code, Code49 code, Code16K code, Data Matrix code, MaxiCode code, etc., and are mainly divided into two types of stacked or layered and checkerboard or matrix.
The two-dimensional bar code technology is an emerging technology that integrates coding, printing, identification, data acquisition, and processing on the basis of computer technology and information technology. The core content of 2D barcode technology is the use of photoelectric scanning equipment to read bar code symbols, so as to achieve automatic identification of the machine, and quickly and accurately enter information into the computer for data processing, in order to achieve the purpose of automated management.
As a new information storage and delivery technology, 2D barcode has received extensive attention from the international community since its inception. After several years of efforts, it has been applied in many fields such as national defense, public security, transportation, health care, industry, commerce, finance, customs, and government management.
The 2D bar code relies on its huge information carrying capacity. It can include the information stored in the back-end database when using the 1D bar code in the bar code, and can directly obtain the corresponding information through reading the bar code, and the 2D bar code also has error correction technology. And anti-counterfeiting features increase data security.
Two-dimensional barcodes can be used to compile photos and fingerprints, which can effectively solve the problem of machine-readable and anti-counterfeit documents. Therefore, it can be widely used in passports, ID cards, driving licenses, military licenses, health certificates, insurance cards and so on.
